Skin tags are common skin outgrowths or protrusions medically known as acrochordon.  Some people call them skin tabs or barnacles that dermatologists also refer to as fibroepithelial polyp, cutaneous Papilloma and soft fibroma.

All these terms describe the same harmless, painless and benign (non-cancerous) skin aberration that project or hang from a narrow skin stalk that can appear almost anywhere on the skin surface. They vary in size and can be smooth or wrinkled, irregular in shape, often taking the color of surrounding skin or discolored.

Skin tags are acquired irrespective of your heath condition and often occur on the eyelids, neck, armpits, underarms, groin folds, buttock folds and under the breasts. While they are more common in adults getting more prevalent in middle age onwards, babies, toddlers and preteens can have them as well.

Should It Be Removed?

Skin tags are generally small and often occur in skin parts well hidden under regular apparel.

Most of the time, they simply discolor, thrombose, dry up and fall off without being noticed and without doing anything about it. But some skin tags depending on where they break out or with in a large size can cause movement discomfort with your clothes. And those that appear on the face such as:

Eyelids

Nostrils

Ear lobes

Lips or on the neck

These can be aesthetically distracting, and unsightly and can be good reasons to have the offending skin tag removed.

What Are The Causes?

There are no confirmed attributable medical conditions that cause skin tags except that they often occur on skin areas that rub against skin or exposed to irritation with clothes. There are, however medical conditions that increase the risk of getting skin tags. Apart from skin irritation and chafing, diabetes and obesity are the most common, followed by pregnancy, acromegaly (gigantism), Crohn’s disease, insulin resistance and infection from the Human Papilloma virus.

Symptoms?

Often breaking out between skin folds, skin tags follow the color of your skin as small surface outgrowth that can discolor over time or enlarge from 1mm to 5 cm in diameter. They are harmless and are not symptomatic of any medial problem other than being unsightly skin imperfections that get more prevalent as we age.

Are There Problems Associated With?

Skin tags generally do not cause problems and fall off without medically bothering about them. Though acquired, they are not symptoms of any medical disease and pose no health threat other than being cosmetic annoyances.

Does Removing A Skin Tag Cause More To Grow?
There’s no medical evidence to suggest excising skin tags or acrochordons can lead to new skin tags to grow elsewhere.  Their removal does not start other skin areas to result in any proliferation of the skin outgrowth. It happens that there are people who are more predisposed to having them than others and they usually break out in the course of aging so that regular removal can become regimental as they appear anywhere on the skin.

What Else Could It Be?
It is easy to get alarmed at your first skin tag as it is in essence an abnormal skin outgrowth formation that hangs out from a skin stalk that can be unsightly if appearing in our face or hands or an annoyance if they get in the way of movement.

Out of their favorite areas like necks and armpit skin aberrations that look like skin tags can also occur in the most unwanted if less obvious places. Skin tags don’t appear in mucosal skin like the vaginal, rectal and mouth areas as they favour dry areas.

But constant irritation in these parts, especially in the external labial regions of the vagina possibly due to underwear friction, masturbation or other unhygienic sexual activity can cause skin tags.

In men, lesions on the penis and scrotum can resemble skin tags but may in fact be genital warts caused by the human Papilloma virus. It is best to consult with your doctor at the first suspicion of having one. Your doctor will need to rule out genital warts or other viral infections first by taking tissue biopsy to make the right diagnosis that what you have is just a benign skin tag.
