Getting Rid Of Anal Skin Tags

Skin tags are harmless skin and tissue outgrowth than can break out on any part of the skin anywhere on the body. They pose no health risk nor contagious and virtually anyone can get skin tags, young and old. Medically referred to as an acrochordon or a cutaneous papilloma, a skin tag commonly grows out on the neck and upper breasts, armpits as well as eyelids and earlobes.

It has been observed that frequent skin to skin friction common in skin folds and in obese persons can give rise to skin tags. There are people more susceptible to them than others which give rise to suspicions of genetic predisposition to it.

While skin tags are harmless, they can grow in some parts of the body that can cause symptomatic itching, irritation or discomfort. One such unwanted place to find a skin tag is around the external anorectal area and is known as anal skin tags.

They can interfere with after-defecation hygiene when wiping the part can be discomforting or even painful. Skin tags generally don’t require treatment as they carry no health threat but if there’s discomfort in one, it becomes a candidate for surgical removal.

Get It Diagnosed

Because anal skin tags are fleshy skin covered outgrowths in the anorectal area, they could be symptomatic of some deeper rectal problem and could even be mistaken as a hemorrhoidal outgrowth or a viral human papilloma infection that also causes genital warts.

Your first step in getting rid of it is to consult with your doctor who will first diagnose the condition often using anoscopy and tissue biopsy to rule out genital warts, hemorrhoids or even skin cancer.  Once confirmed of its benign nature, the skin tag can be removed with any of the options available to your doctor.

Removing Anal Skin Tags

As with skin tags in any other part of the body, removing an anal skin tag requires a simple technical procedure that your doctor can do for you as an out-patent case.

Surgical Excision

The surgical procedure simply calls for snipping out the skin tag with a scalpel or surgical pair of scissors.  A local anesthesia can be applied usually from a topical application of lidocaine without the need for subdural injection. Recovery is just 1-2 days and while blemishing or scarring is minimal, you won’t mind it in that part of your part.

Electric Cautery

Skin tags can also be removed by burning it off by passing an electric current in the affected area in a medical process called electric cautery. Not all general physicians have the equipment for this procedure and you would most likely be referred to a competent dermatologist to do the job.

Cryosurgery

Freezing the skin tag can cause it to whither and fall off painlessly.  But the freezing which often use liquid nitrogen can cause reddening and skin swelling after the procedure and carries more risk of leaving a blemish in the area.  While not recommended for removing skin tags on your face or neck, this should be your least concern wit anal skin tags.

Ligation

There’s also ligation where a suture, thread or dental floss is noosed around the skin to deprive blood flow into so that it dies and eventually fall off. You can also do this at home with your doctor’s blessing.
